  The December meeting of the Encore Book Group will be held at 1:30, Monday, December 1, 2025, downstairs at Lapham.  We will be discussing "What's Bred in the Bone" by Robertson Davies. Second in the celebrated Cornish Trilogy.

  Prior to play, you must purchase a Pickleball Permit (seniors $80, adults $140, family $300) at the New Canaan Recreation Department. Permits are only available to New Canaan Residents. Encore members w/o a Permit can play for $15 each session, payable by credit card at the courts.

  The following two movies will be discussed and then rated:

  The Old Man and the Gun (2018): A tribute to Robert Redford in his last leading role. He plays Forrest Tucker, a real life charming gentlemanly bank robber who escaped prison at the age of 70 and continued his heists well into his 80’s. The film was widely seen as a fitting swan song celebrating Redford’s legacy of charismatic, rebellious characters. The story unfolds with a nostalgic tone, blending suspense with warmth and reflecting on aging, freedom and the thrill of living on one’s own terms. Can be seen on: YouTube, Amazon Prime, Apple TV and Fandango at Home.

  A House of Dynamite (2025): A political thriller centered on the terrifying 18 minutes following the launch of an unidentified nuclear missile aimed at Chicago. The story unfolds in real time, repeating the same 18 minute window from three vantage points: the White House Situation Room, US Strategic Command and the President. The tension heightens as the characters wrestle with incomplete data, moral dilemmas and the weight of irreversible decisions. Can be seen on: Netflix

  • Each member is asked to bring either an appetizer or dessert. 
  • A $5 contribution per person will be collected to cover the cost of drinks.

  Join us for an exquisite afternoon tea experience at Lady Mendl’s Tea Salon, 56 Irving Place, New York, NY — an unconventional, chic venue set inside a historic Georgian brownstone in the heart of Gramercy Park.
  

  About the Venue

  Built in 1834, two landmark structures were meticulously transformed to recreate a bygone era of gracious living. Guests are treated to opulent five-course tea served in a whimsical parlor by a doting staff. Lady Mendl’s blends tradition with modern flair and is frequently used for fashion presentations, bridal showers, small weddings, and private arts events.

We are a fun-loving group and welcome players to be members of a set group or as substitutes. We play bridge on the second Wednesday of the month from September through May starting at 9:15 at the Lapham Community Center.

  White Christmas is about a pair of suave singing and dancing WWII veterans who team up with a lovely singing sister duo, enroute to their Christmas show at a Vermont lodge. The gentlemen are surprised to discover the lodge is owned by their retired General and is in danger of closing.
  When the snow never arrives, and neither does an audience, the quartet pull out all the stops to save the lodge and the holidays. It is Irving Berlin at his finest!

  Following the tea, the Self-Guided Rosen House Tour showcases fine examples of decorative arts from Europe and China including jade, porcelain, and textiles that the Rosen’s admired and collected, and will also be decked out for the holidays with enchanting decorations inspired by the Rosen family archive.

  EATS (The Eating and Tasting Society) is a fun, diverse group of 36 ladies, divided into 3 groups.  Each group gets together every three months, to plan and prepare a lunch for all the members.  Luncheons are usually held at Lapham Community Center.  Recipes are emailed to members and discussed at the luncheon.  There are 9 luncheons each year on the second Thursday of each month (except December, July and August).
