    Encore Book Group

The March meeting of the Encore Book Group will be held at 1:30, Monday, March 30, 2026, downstairs at Lapham.  We will be discussing "The Widow" by John Grisham, a #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER.

John Grisham is the acclaimed master of the legal thriller. Now, he’s back with his first-ever whodunit, even more suspenseful than his courtroom dramas, as a small-time lawyer accused of murder races to find the real killer to clear his name.

Simon Latch is a lawyer in rural Virginia, making just enough to pay his bills while his marriage slowly falls apart. Then, into his office walks Eleanor Barnett, an elderly widow in need of a new will. Apparently, her husband left her a substantial fortune, and no one is aware of it.  Once he hooks the richest client of his career, Simon works quietly to keep her wealth under the radar. But soon her story begins to crack. When she is hospitalized after a car accident, Simon realizes that nothing is as it seems, and he finds himself on trial for a crime he swears he didn’t commit: murder.  Simon knows he’s innocent. But he also knows the circumstantial evidence is against him, and he could spend the rest of his life behind bars. To save himself, he must find the real killer….

There is always a lively discussion.  You can contact Anne Sutcliffe. If you get on the email list, you can be alerted to any changes in the schedule or venue and book availability.

Cherry Blossoms & Kiting Fun at Mill River Park

    Friday, April 10, 2026 | 11:00 AM
    Mill River Park, Stamford

Please note: The event date is weather-dependent and may be adjusted based on cherry blossom timing.

Let’s welcome the Spring at Mill River Park and wrap our friendships in soft pink petals during the annual cherry blossom bloom.

Join us for a leisurely walk and gathering beneath the park’s stunning more than 100 cherry trees, where Yoshino and Kwanzan varieties typically burst into  spectacular bloom in Early April. These iconic trees, known for their delicate pink and white blossoms, have become a cherished symbol of renewal, beauty, and community.

Mill River Park’s 28+ acres offer plenty to enjoy, including the Great Lawn, a wide-open green space that’s perfect for kite flying. Spring breezes are often best in the late morning, making it a wonderful time to watch colorful kites dance against a backdrop of blooming cherry trees, in the carousel area. Kites will be provided by the club, to share among the group.

Brief History of the Cherry Tree Grove

Mill River Park’s cherry trees were a gift from Junzo Nojima, a Japanese immigrant who moved to Stamford in 1926. After local residents supported him following World War II vandalism of his restaurant, he donated over 100 cherry blossom trees as a symbol of gratitude and renewal. Cuttings from the original trees were later grown into 28 new trees, preserving his legacy today.

Optional Post-Event Lunch at Villa Italia across from Park.  View Menu here (26 Mill River St, Stamford), conveniently located right across the street.

Arthur Avenue Mauro Tour  - Round 3

This round is reserved for members who have not yet experienced The Mauro Tour, so we can welcome new faces to Arthur Avenue!

For those who’ve never been, but have always dreamed of going to Arthur Avenue, yet don't know where to go... this intimate, introductory Arthur Avenue Mauro Tour is for you!

    Arthur Avenue?

Arthur Avenue is one of New York City's most storied and delicious neighborhoods. It's known as the "real Little Italy" of the Bronx and is home to generations of bakers, butchers, pasta makers, and restaurateurs who’ve kept authentic Italian traditions alive.

    The Mauro Tour?

Mauro was the father of our very own Encore member Christina Cappitella Bartels. For decades, Christina's dad took his children, relatives, and friends on an annual tour of Arthur Avenue. His tour! His way! His favorite spots! No detours! No side-excursions! No negotiation! :) Christina has generously offered to continue her dad's tradition by bringing "The Mauro Tour" to Encore! This introductory tour is your chance to experience the flavors, the history, and the atmosphere that make Arthur Avenue so special. It's perfect for those who have never been to Arthur Avenue and don't know how to get started.

    Details:

    • Date: Thursday, April 16
    • Schedule: Meet at Waveny Park at 10am. Depart at 10:15am sharp. Visit Arthur Avenue from approximately 11:15am - 1:30pm. Return to Waveny Park at ~ 2:45pm.
    • Cost: Pay as you explore Arthur Avenue (pizza, cannoli, drinks, etc.) PLUS $5.00 cash for your driver (gas contribution)
    • Limited to 8 people -- however, if there is additional interest, Christina has offered to do The Mauro Tour more than once, so we will have a waiting list with a future date TBD.
    • Transportation: Carpool ONLY (Sue Greenan and Tina Bartels are volunteer drivers)
    • Note: Please be sure to wear comfortable shoes. There will be plenty of walking and standing (!) while we are on Arthur Avenue.

The Encore On the Go! team can’t wait to share a taste of Arthur Avenue with you!

Let's Walk, Lee Garden Tour & Potluck Delight

Irwin Park Walk + Lee Garden Tour + Lunch with Friends

When: Monday, May 11, 10:30 AM

Starting Point: Irwin Park, 848 Weed Street, New Canaan

Garden Location: Lee Garden, 89 Chichester Road, New Canaan

Parking at Lee Garden: Street parking on Toquam or Myanos Road (right next to the garden)

Optional: Potluck Lunch at Ellen Cumming’s home

Celebrate spring with a beautiful morning of walking, flowers, and friendship!

We’ll begin with a scenic 2–3 mile walk at Irwin Park. Afterward, we’ll drive (can carpool) about one mile (3 minutes) to Lee Garden, where a member of the Beautification League will lead us on a guided tour and share the fascinating history of New Canaan’s treasured garden—at the height of its bloom.

Following the tour, those who wish can join a relaxed potluck lunch at Ellen Cumming’s home, just a short walk from the garden.  If you plan to attend the lunch, please bring a dish and drop it off at Ellen’s on your way to Lee Garden by 11:20 AM.

Enjoy fresh air, vibrant blossoms, and great company—what better way to welcome spring?
